DeKalb Animal Shelter
At the DeKalb Animal Shelter, we are a staff of 2 full time employees as part of the City of Smithville. We are proud to say we are a low-kill shelter, we work tirelessly to partner with esteemed rescues, and strive to educate the public about responsible pet ownership. We also have the support of two non-profit organizations. We've grown considerably since our start, all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing community!
Our shelter has made immense progress in our short 3.5 years of operation. Because of this growth, the shelter expanded beyond the available resources and various changes are currently being made from the top. The shelter is still functioning as normal with the same low-kill policies and staff. We are optimistic that forward progress will be achieved. We are currently in a transition phase to build upon what has taken the entire community to build. Please stay tuned!
ANIMALS ARE OUR MISSION
We focus on giving the maximum positive effort. Providing assistance for animals in need is our passion. Our staff and volunteers provide the momentum that drive us do good work. We strive to take actions that make a long-lasting difference for our community as a whole.
Seeing a need for proactive, non-profit support for our community's animal population, members of our community joined together to find sensible solutions-and the DeKalb Animal Coalition was formed. The DeKalb Animal Coalition (501c3) formed agreements with both the City of Smithville and DeKalb County to operate a congruent animal shelter.
As of early 2020, the Friends of the DeKalb Animal Shelter (501c3) was formed to offset adoption costs, medical needs, and provide education and animal advocacy to our community. They are currently reducing adoption costs for the public-$50 off for dogs and $40 off for cats. We are so excited to see this partnership continue to grow!

MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Each day is a step in the right direction. Every animal we rehome, rescue, spay, neuter, and provide assistance to is proof that the little things are worth it.
